I've been wanting to scope out MHG Ice Arena for a while now. With TA playing there in the MHI tournament last night I figured that was the time to do it. Sadly, I don't see myself going back again which is a bummer since it's just down the road.
There are some interesting design flaws at the arena. It's almost like the building was pre-existing and they decided to squeeze an ice arena into it. For all I know that could in fact be the case. The ice is narrower than most and the seating is at each end of the ice rather than along one side. The only shooting options are through the netting at either end of the ice or through the nasty glass at either end. As you can imagine, this is far from desirable and nets some inferior image quality.
With the smaller ice size and choosing the nasty glass shooting, my glass was a little on the long side for just being able to shoot one end of the ice. Yeah, I could have slapped another shorter lens on, but that would have had it's consequences. Instead I chose a different strategy and concentrated on shooting portrait style rather than action style. So, not much action to see here and not a lot of images overall. I walked away with a third of what I normally would. Some examples:
