I'll be the first to admit that after seeing the opening game of last season, I didn't leave with a very good impression of this sport. The whistle seemed to blow any time the ball got rolling which made for a pretty boring game. Nobody seemed to know anything about the sport, such as rules, penalties or even positions. I think that all I came away with was that the clock doesn't stop and with a score of 1-1 there wasn't a whole lot of scoring to look forward to.
Well, as time progressed the team obviously improved with every game as every good team does. They finished last season undefeated which was in itself a huge feat and a rare occurance.
Though the results were the same, this year was different. The team was an offensive and defensive machine. From what I'm told a few records were even set including quickest time to score and highest scoring game. I'm not exactly sure who keeps track of middle school statistics, but Coach Morin seems to be on right top of them. The team was exciting to watch due to the teamwork which led to high scoring and defensive prowess. They just seemed to have it together and it showed. I don't know the stats, but I think it's safe to say that they scored over 40 goals and allowed fewer than 5.
The girls can't take all the credit however. I don't think they would be anywhere near where they are now without a great coach. I'm sure having the same great coach both years was a big help. Great teams just don't exist without having great leadership...and that they have had. So, thanks Coach Morin for all that you've done and for having the passion to do it year after year. Keep up the good work and best of luck in the coming years.
That's a wrap on the SMS field hockey 2010 class.
Disclaimer: I'm not a writer and I still don't know anything about the sport.;)
This is what Wells was playing against in the final game. Saco did not have a goalie so it was an open net for the entire game. Saco won 8-0.
