To quote Clark Griswold, "They invented Christmas tree lots because people forgot how to have a fun old fashioned family Christmas and are satisfied with scrawny dead overpriced trees that have no special meaning......kids, this is what our fore fathers did. They walked down into the woods, found that special tree and cut it down with their bare hands."
We embarked on the annual tree hunting adventure last weekend. It's a seek, cut and haul mission. This has been a family tradition for almost as long as I can remember. The family circle for this adventure used to consist of quite a few members (aunts and uncles) but has shrunk down to my brother Eric's family and my parents. I'd be willing to bet that my brother and I are to blame for the disappearance of these people. See, my brother and I are pretty fanatical about having to find what we think is the perfect tree. This typically involves many hours wandering around the tree farm with cold hands and wet feet listening to the rest of our family complain about how long we've been there. They feverishly point to tree after tree asking what could possibly be wrong with each and every one. What they don't know...what they don't have, is the passion for that special tree. They just don't see the one that is lit from the heavens just like Clark Griswold's perfect tree. They don't have the pride in not only finding your special tree, but also cutting it down with your bare hands and then hauling it out of the woods like our fore fathers. Luckily for us these trees show no resemblance to those tiny scrawny trees from their time. To everyone else, it's just a tree; a tree that can be made pretty back home with lights and decorations (think Charlie Brown). To us it's pretty before we even saw it down.
Well, now that you know the history and reasoning behind the day I'll share a few pictures. I was of course on a mission so I didn't really get anything special. Here are a few quick grabs from the day. Poor kids! They know not what they are getting into.
It's a damn classic!! It's on every night this week for it's 20th anniversary, believe it or not.
